Putting Down Roots: A Graphical Exploration of Community Attachment
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper, we explore the relationships that individuals have with their communities. This work was prepared as part of the ASA Data Expo ‘13 sponsored by the Graphics Section and the Computing Section, using data provided by the Knight Foundation Soul of the Community survey. The Knight Foundation in cooperation with Gallup surveyed 43,000 people over three years in 26 communities across the United States with the intention of understanding the association between community attributes and the degree of attachment people feel towards their community. These include the different facets of both urban and rural communities, the impact of quality education, and the trend in the perceived economic conditions of a community over time. The goal of our work is to facilitate understanding of why people feel attachment to their communities through the use of an interactive and web-based visualization. We will explain the development and use of web-based interactive graphics, including an overview of the R package Shiny and the JavaScript library D3, focusing on the choices made in producing the visualizations and technical aspects of how they were created. Then we describe the stories about community attachment that unfolded from our analysis. 1 ar X iv :1 60 8. 04 84 3v 1 [ st at .O T ] 1 7 A ug 2 01 6

Dynamics of soil exploration by fine roots down to a depth of 10 m throughout the entire rotation in Eucalyptus grandis plantations
Although highly weathered soils cover considerable areas in tropical regions, little is known about exploration by roots in deep soil layers. Intensively managed Eucalyptus plantations are simple forest ecosystems that can provide an insight into the belowground growth strategy of fast-growing tropical trees. Fast exploration of deep soil layers by eucalypt fine roots may contribute to achievin...
متن کاملProbabilistic Graphical Models and their Role in Databases
Probabilistic graphical models provide a framework for compact representation and efficient reasoning about the joint probability distribution of several interdependent variables. This is a classical topic with roots in statistical physics. In recent years, spurred by several applications in unstructured data integration, sensor networks, image processing, bio-informatics, and code design, the ...
متن کاملP65: The Role of Attachment Styles and Cognitive Emotion Regulation Strategies on Adolescent\'s Social Anxiety
The aim of this study was to determine the role of attachment styles and cognitive emotion regulation strategies in adolescents' social anxiety. 430 Iranian high school students (200 boys and 230 girls) were selected by multistage cluster sampling method from high schools in Isfahan city and completed a battery of scales including attachment styles scale (Collins and Read, 1990), cognitive emot...
متن کاملSpatial Patterns of Ectomycorrhizal Assemblages in a Monospecific Forest in Relation to Host Tree Genotype
Ectomycorrhizas (EcM) are important for soil exploration and thereby may shape belowground interactions of roots. We investigated the composition and spatial structures of EcM assemblages in relation to host genotype in an old-growth, monospecific beech (Fagus sylvatica) forest. We hypothesized that neighboring roots of different beech individuals are colonized by similar EcM assemblages if hos...
